In order to increase public awareness on high quality potato varieties, "Mongolian Potato" Program organized a promotional sale on April 20-21, 201. During the event, about 8 000 kg potato seeds of Impala, Vitara, Sante, Solist, Quarta and Gala varieties were sold for household seeding purpose from Orkhon-Uul, Dornod, Khentii, Darkhan-Uul, Arkhangai,Tuv, Selenge, Dundgobi provinces and all summer camps of Ulaanbaatar city. The seeds were sterilized and packed in 10 kg sacks. A variety introduction and other related information materials were attached to it.

"Mongolian Potato" program and Mongolian Farmers Association for Rural Development (MFARD) jointly organized the training for farmers on loan schemes. The training was held on April 05, 2011. About 20 seed multipliers in Tuv, Selenge, Dornod, Arkhangai, Khuvsgul, Khentii, Umnugobi provinces participated in the training.
The training was facilitated by the trainers and loan officers of Agricultural Bank of Mongolia. The theoretical training were on loan product and service, methodology on writing project proposal, monetary accumulation and expense and debt management of business organizations. The participants practiced teir acquired theoretical knowledge by team work, discussion and project sample writing.

Five of the Mongolian Potato Programme's beneficiaries (3 farmers-Habiilhan from Altantsugts soum, Bayan-Ulgii province, Battsooj,Ts from Sumber soum, Gobisumber province, Gantumur.M from Murun soum, Khuvsgul province, 2 seed producing companies-"Modun-Shanyu" from Bayantumen soum, Dornod provnice and "Khasuu Mandal" company from Erdenebuglan soum, Arkhangai province) were named state farmers of the year by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry. Three potato farmers and two potato-producing companies were honoured for their outstanding achievements in growing potatoes and other crops in the past three years.

Mr. Surenkhorloo..J, Chief Agronomist of Tuv province and Local Coordinator of MPP said that: The seed renovation work is started in Tuv province since 2005 and the number of the involved farmers and entities increased year to year. Today 21 informal seed multipliers and 196 seed renovating farmers are working in Tuv province. In 2009, within the "50rd National Campaign for Rehabilitation of Crop Sector" our province harvested 40, 066 tones of potato which was considered the highest yield in last 22 years. More than that, this year the yield has reached to 50, 144 tones and our province was selected for its highest yield among other provinces. Also, 119 families and 26 companies could renovate their potato seeds by high quality seeds originated from Holland and Germany. Totally 3960 ha was planted under potato. The potato farmers followed the advices very well and taken appropriate measures on time to protect the plants from the diseases.

MPP gave presentations on work report of 2010 and work planning of 2011. The representatives were divided into 3 groups and discussed the issues to be reflected into activity planning-2011.

1st edition of "Potato variety catalogue" was printed in 2007. This year 2nd edition with newly introduced varieties was published.
To use as a handout in the trainings on potato seed production and field demonstration training the catalogue of 35 potato varieties which officially planted and tested on the territory of Mongolia was printed.
The variety descriptions and main potato diseases and pests /with actual photos/ were included in the catalogue. It will be very useful to determine varieties and diseases in field condition. The Field Inspectors and seed multipliers were delighted with the handout. The catalogue is updated in every 3 years depending upon newly included varieties.

| The Mongolian National Chamber for Commerce and Industry organized the "Organic Mongolia" exhibition in October, 2010. In this exhibition Mrs. Atartungalag displayed 16 new potato varieties and gave advices for the consumers. During the event she sold about 2 tones of table potato Vitara variety. |
This year, she planted potato in 4 ha and harvested 30-33 t/ha. Mrs. Atartungalag distributed potato seeds of 12 varieties to 11 local entities. She is successfully testing 22 varieties at Bornuur branch of the State Variety Testing Commission.

Annual harvest fair "Green days of Autumn-2010" was organized by MoFALI during 16-23, September, 2010 at "Misheel Expo" Exhibition center and "Mongolian Potato" Program successfully took part in this customary event.
During the event, information about the new potato varieties that are registered /Impala, Vitara and Sante/ and tested /Gala, Solist and Quarta/ in Mongolia and application tutoring of them were provided to the customers. Supplementary short videos on potato planting technology, potato production methods, potato in cooking and potato care instruction were displayed.

The State Professional Inspection Agency and City Professional Inspection Agency organized the "Healthy Food Campaign" on September 15, 2010. During the event the "Mongolian Potato" Program introduced the adapted potato varieties such as Impala, Vitara and Sante and Miranda, Gala, Solist and Sekura which are under variety testing. Mr.Ganbaatar.S, seed and variety specialist made the presentation on "New potato varieties and healthy potato production". The Program distributed the introduction materials for the consumers on new potato varieties.

"Mongolian Potato" program imported the complete line including washing, drying and packaging equipment from "GRIMME Solution" company, Germany. Line has capacity of producing 6 to 7 tons of potatoes per day. This is the first time in Mongolia table potatoes were washed, dried and packaged in proper manner.
Consumers are now able to make choice from genuine Dutch and German variety potatoes from shelf without uncertainty. The advantage of packaged potatoes will facilitate the labor and save time of the consumers. Besides, the damaged or infected potatoes will be graded during the process and will not be included into package.

"Mongolian Potato" program was recognized for its contribution to the Development of Organic Agriculture in Mongolia and was nominated by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry. So the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced "Mongolian Potato Program" as "The Organic Agriculture Development program of the year" at Silk Road award ceremony on February 10, 2010 and awarded with Honorary Order "Silk Road".
"Mongolian Potato" Program works to supply by domestically produced, ecologically pure and high quality organic potatoes to Mongolian consumers.
The Program organizes the most simple and most adequate trainings and consultancies on seed multiplication, protection from diseases & pests and efficient yield utilization of multiple-use and high quality potato varieties. As a result in 2009, Mongolia first time harvested 156.000 tones of potato which is record in Mongolian agricultural history. The self-sufficiency rate of domestic potato production is 100 percent.

The Planning Workshop of the Mongolian Potato Program (MPP) was successfully organized on December 22, 2009 and more than 100 representatives from Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Research Institutes, Formal and Informal Seed Multipliers, Seed inspectors and Local Coordinators of MPP.
MPP gave presentations on work report of 2009 and work planning of 2010. The representatives were divided into 3 groups and discussed the issues to be reflected into activity planning-2010. After that, researchers and seed multipliers participated in 3 different trainings as below:1. Training on a small Loan
The Board of the Mongolian Farmers Association for Rural Development (MFARD) updated its rule and started to afford a small loan with 8% interest per annum for supporting seed renovation and seed production of the farmers. In 2008, 18 members participated in the training on capacity building training for business development. After the training the farmers submitted their project proposals. From this, 7 project proposals were selected and received loan totally for 9.0 million tugriks. During the planning workshop 22 farmers participated in the training on loan schemes. The training was facilitated by the trainers and loan officers of Agricultural Bank of Mongolia on loan product and service, methodology on writing project proposal, monetary accumulation and expense and debt management of business organizations.

Revolving fund agronomist and accountant of Mongolian Potato Program met with the seed multipliers of Selenge, Tuv and Darkhan-Uul provinces during 26-27, November. Main purpose of the engagement was to conduct monitoring on results and utilization of the loans provided by Revolving fund and to obtain farmers' suggestions on further activities of the Program through identifying current constraints.
Lack of pledges is the main difficulty for rural borrowers, especially for the farmers. Both the individuals and the entities engaging agricultural farming have limitations in requesting loans with their field, machines and equipments including irrigation system as pledge, because banks don't accept such type of pledge due to the high risk although the they have the right to apply for a loan with their property.

In order to give seed multipliers up to date knowledge about new technologies and technics, to gain experience from the neighbor country in seed potato farming which is run under the environmental and soil condition same as Mongolia and to enable seed potato farmers of both countries exchange practices, "Mongolian Potato" Program organized a study tour to HeSheng company of potato seed production located in Hulunbuir province, Agricultural university of China, Research Center of Potato, Center of Seed Quality Control and Academy of Agricultural Mechanization of Harbin city in Harbin city in Heilonjan province during 21-30, October 2009. Team of 15 representatives including local coordinators of the Program, formal and informal seed multipliers and the researchers of Research institutes and Central laboratory participated in the tour.

Mongolian Potato Program organized an tour to seed and ware potato storages during the period of 15-18, October. Seed multipliers, seed renovators, state inspectors, partners and the beneficiaries of the Program participated in the tour.Main objectives of the activity were to introduce current condition of storages and provide updated and detailed information about Program activities and the measures to be taken regarding storage of new variety potatoes including increasing knowledge about specification and procedures of potato storage and follow up of those in mechanic and automatically operated storages. Moreover, recommendations and instructions were given regarding post harvest cares to be taken in different types of storages.

"Mongolian Potato" program organized the 2-day training titled "Technology of seed production" for the newly selected informal seed multipliers and seed renovating farmers from western agricultural region. The training was held at Bayannuur soum of Bayan-Ulgii province during 27-28.August.2009.
Over 80 participants including seed multipliers, seed renovating farmers, experts from agriculture departments of the provinces and seed inspectors from Uvs, Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan and Bayan-Ulgii provinces attended the training. Potato sector professionals, experts and researchers of MPP and PSARTI provided theoretical session covering general issues in seed potato system and roles as well as responsibilities of formal and informal seed multipliers in the system. The training was a nice opportunity for the farmers to obtain professional instructions through discussions, comparative analysis and experience sharing.

Mongolian Potato Program has successfully organized an International conference "Potato Crop Management In Temperate Zone In East Asia" in collaboration with East South East Asia Pacific (ESEAP) Regional office of International Potato Center (CIP). The Conference was held during 12-16 of August, 2009 in Ulaanbaatar city, Darkhan-Uul and Selenge provinces. Over 80 representatives including 20 potato researchers and experts from Vietnam, China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Philippines and over 60 specialists from agricultural research institutes of Mongolia such as Research Institute of Plant Protection (RIPP), Mongolian State University of Agriculture (MSUA) and Plant Science, Agricultural Research and Training Institute (PSARTI) as well as the formal seed multipliers have taken part in the event. Head of Agricultural policy and implementation department of MoFALI, Ch.Perenlei and Head of ESEAP-CIP, Fernando Ezeta were the respected quests of the conference.

Over 60 participants including potato seed multipliers, seed renovating farmers, experts from agriculture departments and seed inspectors from the provinces of Dornod, Khentii, Sukhbaatar, Tuv, Selenge, Darkhan-Uul, Bulgan, Khuvsgul, Arkhangai as well as Orkhon and Ulaanbaatar attended the training.
|Baseline survey of potato consumption in the rural area was conducted|

Mongolian Potato Program, with the collaboration of the research team of MSUA, conducted the potato consumption survey in major potato producing areas from April to May. The survey covered total of 320 households in 13 soums of 5 central aimags and the respondents consisted of soum center residents, potato growers, local authorities and herders/ex-herders.
The residents of central agriculture regions have higher potato consumption and are more knowledgeable about potato. Hence almost all households, except few grow potato in these provinces. Moreover, rural area consumers were shown to be keen on trying alternative ways of processing potato in order to lengthen its shelf life.

This year, 2000 ha area was planted with potato in the frame work of Mongolian Potato Program. It shows 3.6 times increase compared to the area of 554.4 ha planted with Dutch and German potato varieties last year. Moreover, it is equal to over 10% of total national planting area of 12500.1 ha cultivated with potato in 2009.

The CIP experts, Mr. Wang Fengyi and Mrs. Lorna Sister visited during 24.May to 6.June 2009 upon the invitations by MPP. Dr.Wang Fengui is seed specialist of CIP at Harbin city of China and he aimed to conduct monitoring on production of basic seeds and certification of seeds in the framework of MPP and to provide professional consultancy. During his mission Dr.Wang Fengui visited the fields of elite seed producing companies in the Central Agricultural Region, monitored post-planting care of elite seed lots, met with the PSARTI potato researchers to discuss about designing of potato breeding program, provided recommendations on variety evaluation procedures and visited the early generation seed nurseries at FSMs. He also provided consultation at the State Variety Test Station on field experiment designing.
|Multiplication of the elite seeds of new potato varieties released in Mongolia is progressing successfully|

In the frame of its main objective of improving seed quality, advancing monitoring procedure and enhancing potato seed production on national level, Mongolian Potato Program aims to improve seed production system, produce disease-free elite seeds well adapted and high yielding under the climate condition of Mongolia and supply farmers with elite seed to support seed renovation for its II phase of implementation.
MPP is collaborating with agricultural research institutes and licensed seed multiplying entities in production of the registered varieties of Sante, Vitara and Impala. The Program provides methodological and materials support and put more effort on capacity building. Although the production of elite seed potato is progressing well, it isn't possible yet to completely renovate the national seed stock to be planted within a year.

The Mongolian Potato Program has started in 2004. It is implemented by MFARD (Mongolian Farmer Association for Rural Development) and funded by SDC (Swiss Development and Cooperation). Its aim is to re-vitalize the Mongolian potato sector.
In 2009, for the second time of the program's life, an Agronomic Swiss student does an internship by them. He does different work at the MPP.

In the framework of Mongolian Potato Program, Mongolian Farmers' Association for Rural Development /MFARD/ NGO imported 60 tons of complex nitric, phosphoric and potash fertilizer, "Azophosca" from Russia and it was sold to farmers and entities.
Importation of agricultural inputs was interrupted for several years, and only single fertilizers of potassium or phosphorus were brought in last years.

Mongolian Farmers' Association for Rural Development was recognized by Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industries for its good experience and commitment and appointed for the implementation of activities on improvement of potato sector within the framework of "3rd National Campaign for rehabilitation of crop sector" launched by Government of Mongolia.
MFARD won an international bid for procurement of high quality potato seed announced from FAO project on "Input supply to vulnerable population under the soaring food price", to be implemented by MoFALI and sponsored by FAO. The main goal of this project is to contribute to the efforts of the donor community and of the Government in their support to the poorest rural families affected by the food price increases and to boost agricultural production in smallholders farming systems to address the soaring food prices.

1. 87 tons of elite seed is multiplied.
Harvest of 1200 tons was achieved from the 50 ha plantation of "Sante" super elite seeds imported last year. 180 tons of those were sold to seed renovating farmers and entities for 750 thousand tugrik. Moreover, 87 tons of elite seed will be multiplied under contract.
2. Seed of new variety is distributed for free.
600 tons of "Astila" and new seed potatoes collected from the members and seed multiplying farmers of Mongolian Farmers' Association for Rural Development are supplied to the project of FAO. Supplied seed potatoes are distributed to 8000 farmer families of 12 provinces free of charge.

The Program signed the contract with "New Crop" Co.,Ltd for cooperation to develop a new cropping system to be used in irrigated potato production. According to the contract "New Crop" Co.,Ltd imported set of potato equipments including potato planters, cultivators between rows, haulm cutters and combine harvesters from Netherlands which designed for 75-80 cm row distance.

4 delegates of the "Mongolian Potato" Program participated in the "Global Potato Conference-2008" which was held at new Delhi, India during December 9-12, 2008 to celebrate the International Year of Potato.
The theme of the conference was "Opportunities and challenges in the New Millennium". This conference was jointly organized by the Indian Potato Organization, Central Potato research Institute, Shimla and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

The survey was conducted among the Ulaanbaatar city's consumers from November11th till November 26th with collaboration of Economic and Business School, Mongolian State University of Agriculture. The survey was aimed to identify UB city's potential market capacity, define buying trends of German and Holland varieties, identify consumers preferences towards packaging and identify possible price, location, quantity on sales of potatoes.
812 households from 102 khoroos, 6 districts were participated, with research team's assumption of 2 percent error in collection and with reliability not below 90 percent.

For the purpose of improving post-harvest management and storing high quality potato seed in proper condition, MPP upgraded the storage with capacity of 1000 tones in UB city. The ventilation system from Agrovent company, Netherlands was installed in the storage and it will be a model for the same Russian type of mechanized, abandoned old storages in Mongolia.

The Program organized the Study tour for the local coordinators (aimag chief agronomists) from 8 aimags and Ulaanbaatar during November 17-25, 2008 in Khukh khot of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.
The study tour aimed to acquinting with potato seed farming, small scale tractor and equipments, laboratory of potato seed production and mini-tuber production, greenhouse for minitubers, production of cereals, potato and vegatables, equipments used for plant protection chemicals, fertilizers, equipments for greenhouse, activity of the company which produces synthetic cover of greenhouse.

TV program with cognitive purposes on potato and program activities was made for dedication of International Year of Potato-2008 and broadcasted to the public. The honoured TV journalist Mr.Zoljargal.G from Mongolian National Broadcasting was worked for the Program. This program was broadcasted through commercial TV channels during "Days to advertise new potato varieties" within the program of "Green Days of Autumn" which was organized in the beginning of the October. Uzbekistan is specific and feasible for developing potato seed farming due to its relatively warm weather which creates condition to get double harvest per year and mountainous regions above sea level. The basic direction of modern potato breeding is not only limited by high yield and starch content of potato and it also directed to resistance to late blight and virus infection. The country tests and selects the clones (tubers derived from the same potato plant) from the International Potato Centre in different ecological regions and make it adaptable to the region and multiply its seeds. Also during the trip our delegates visited the Institute of Vegetables, Fruits and Potato in Tashkent and familiarized with conducted research work.

The President of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, His Excellency Andre Bugnon, paid the first official Swiss visit to Mongolia at the Parliamentary level since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1964.Mr Bugnon and his wife Christiane were in the country from October 17-20 on an invitation from the Speaker of Parliament, D. Demberel. During his visit Mr.Bugnon visited the Mongolian State Champion Farmer L. Boldbaatar.

Mrs.Julieta Rodas-Roa, Director, Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center who was appointed from the International Potato Center and facilitated the training. Training topics were on participatory research and development (PR & D), its advantages, origins, concepts, application, PR & D n a commodity development program / development cycle, PR & D, PR & D methods and tools, PR & D in "Mongolian Potato" Program, PR&D methods and tools vis-a-vis other social science methods, situation analysis/ diagnostics, agro-ecosystems analysis, livelihood systems analysis, problem / causal tree analysis, decision-making tools, data collection, processing, utilization; fieldwork / practicum / data processing/report preparation, reporting / critiquing, value chain and supply chain analysis, PR & D in the planning and monitoring.

The Program selected and imported 6 new potato varieties named as Artemis, Provento, Madeleine, Sinora, Kuroda, Zafira from "Agrico" seed company of Holland for its early and middle early maturity, yellow flesh and preference for table consumption.
These new variety seeds were planted in the Demonstration field of the Program at Orkhon soum of Darkhan-Uul province, Branch of the State variety Testing Station Plant Science, Agriculture Research and Technology Institute and Research Institute for Plant Protection for revealing their adaptability in Mongolian agro-ecological condition, cooking quality and other variety characteristics.

From 2008, in order to deliver new variety seeds to local potato farmers and to renovate their own seed stock the "Mongolian Potato" Program newly introduced the seed renovation work in all soums and aimags where the contracted seed multipliers are working. At present, about 80 potato farmers from more than 30 soums of 15 aimags were selected according to the following criteria.

The meeting consisted of sessions of presentations of invited and submitted papers and poster sessions. The invited papers will set the scene for the subsequent presentations and discussions.
The International Potato Center (CIP) is in Peru. The Food and Agricultural Organization of United Nations (FAO) has announced this year is the UN International Year of Potato (IYP). CIP holds the largest collection of potato biodiversity in the world, intrust in its genebanks, and developed research to utilize the potato to contribute achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially food security poverty alleviation.

Mr J.Baldandorj and Mrs Yu.Sarantuya, two of the potato farmers working with the Mongolian Potato Program, were named State Champion Farmers in 2007 in recognition of outstanding their achievements in growing potatoes during past 3 years. Yu.Sarantuya, who planted Impala, Sante and other varieties of potatoes harvested 23 t/ha. J.Baldandorj who planted Sante variety harvested 33 t/ha.

Since the First phase of the Program successfully implemented between 2005-2007 the implementation of Second phase will be started from 2008.
Correspondently, the Planning Workshop of Phase II of the "Mongolian Potato" Program was held on from January 15 to January 16, 2008.
More than 100 people participated in the Planning workshop including representatives of SDC, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, International Potato Center, Agricultural Research Institutes, Mongolian State University of Agriculture, International and local NGO-s (working in agricultural sector), State Professional Inspection Agency and Chief Agronomists (Local coordinators of the Program) of 21 provinces, contracted formal and Informal seed multipliers (potato farmers).

Two of the potato varieties, that were tested and introduced by the Revitalization of Mongolian Potato Sector Program succeeded to be registered as adapted (Impala and Vitara) and promising (Sante) variety under Mongolian agro-ecological conditions by the Session of the State Commission for Variety Testing, held on 7th December at the Plant Science, Agricultural Research and Training Institution in Darkhan. In 2007, seeds were planted in 200 ha in most of the agricultural regions of Mongolia.

On November 7-11, 2007 the team consisted of Turmandakh.T, Program Coordinator and the Ganbaatar.S, Seed Specialist visited the seed multipliers in different places including Khongor soum of Darkhan-Uul province, Sant and Baruunburen soums of Selenge province, Bayan-Undur soum of Orkhon province, Selenge and Orkhon soums of Bulgan province. During the trip they gave technical advices on seed multiplication, crop and farm management, plant protection and seed storage conditions to the contracted seed multipliers of the regions.
